(5/1/16) – Anaheim Hills, CA) … Team California survived a furious last day assault by Team USA at Eagle Glen Golf Club and held on to capture the 2016 Golfest Cup. The final score was 13.5 to 10.5, allowing Team California to claim the Cup for the third consecutive year.
The final score was not indicative of how close the match became on the final day. Team California had jumped out to a huge lead during the first two days of competition. On Friday afternoon (4/29/16) at Oak Quarry Golf Club, Team California laid claim to four of the six Fourball matches and halved one other to build a healthy 4.5 – 1.5 advantage. Three of those matches were settled on the 18th green.
Team USA, which was 4-1 during last year’s Alternate Shot matches at the Wigwam Resort, was planning to duplicate that effort at the Golf Club at Glen Ivy (4/30/16.) Instead, Team California swept the first four matches on the course and tied the next. Bill Stewart and Matt Rohr scored the lone USA victory over Mark Suzda and Art Taylor by a 3 & 2 margin. With only the Singles Matches remaining on Sunday morning, California lead USA by a dominating 9 to 3 margin.
A very dry Eagle Glen Golf Club proved to be the toughest of the three venues for the Singles matches and Team USA really stepped up their game. They were extremely motivated to save face and struck early and often, winning the first four matches, and five of the first six to trail Team California by only two – 10-8. At that point, Team USA began to run out of time and matches. In the ninth match, Team California’s Tom Gudvangen’s sunk a 20′ foot putt on the 18th hole which mathematically clinched the Cup, as California walked away with a 13.5 – 10.5 victory.
California Captain Mike Rittner admitted that he was getting a little nervous as the results began coming in on Sunday. He ended up giving a lot of credit to his team’s three rookies. The trio of new players – Lou Dominguez, Juan Carlos Serrano and Jeff Mason – went a combined 6-1-2 over the weekend.
